DJs and turntables were the founding elements of hip-hop. Kool Herc and other DJs would tap into the power lines to connect their equipment and perform at venues such as public basketball courts and at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Bronx, New York, a historic building "where hip hop was born".

The North Carolina hip-hop scene has grown over the last several years. Little Brother was one of the first acts to come out of North Carolina and receive national acclaim. Last year, other hip-hop artists from North Carolina such as 9th Wonder, Phonte, and J. Cole released highly anticipated albums that were well-received. North Carolina was an untapped market, but is currently a flourishing area with talented hip-hop acts.
